    UConn Environment Corps Classes for Fall 2020

    The UConn Environment Corps (E-Corps) is comprised of three different course opportunities (Brownfield Corps, Climate Corps and Stormwater Corps) with a goal of expanding and studying a new public engagement program combining teaching, service learning and Extension outreach with Connecticut communities. Students take a traditional academic course in the first semester, followed by an optional, second semester independent study working with communities across Connecticut.

     ECorps Course Opportunities:

    Brownfield Corps:

    ENVE, ENVS, EVST 3110: Brownfield Redevelopment

    This course will introduce students to the process of investigating, cleaning up and putting back into use abandoned sites with suspected contamination, also known as brownfields.

    This interdisciplinary course has been developed specifically for the Connecticut Brownfield Initiative and covers the following aspects of brownfields: regulatory and liability issues, urban planning, funding mechanisms and grant proposal writing, fundamentals of site investigation and remediation. This course is designed so that students of any background can take it.

    • Open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students
    • No prerequisites
    • Meets: Tu/Th 3:30 – 4:20, with one discussion section at either Fr 11:15-12:05 or 12:20- 1:10 pm

     

    Climate Corps:

    ENVE, ENVS, or EVST 3100: Climate Resilience and Adaptation: Municipal Policy and Planning This class is an interdisciplinary study of climate change focusing on the local, municipal scale: impacts, policy, vulnerability and adaptation. We examine strategies such as vulnerability assessments that help local communities determine priorities for adaptation efforts, and we discuss what those efforts might entail, as well as roadblocks to moving forward.

    • 3 credits
    • Open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students
    • No prerequisites, but NRE 1000, EVST 1000 or ENVE 1000 is recommended preparation
    • Meets: Tu/Th 3:30 – 4:45

     

    Stormwater Corps:

    NRE 4695: Special Topics: Green Stormwater Infrastructure Practices

    This course will cover the suite of green stormwater infrastructure practices being used to infiltrate stormwater runoff, their effectiveness, design specifications, installation processes, and maintenance practices. Students will learn how to conduct a stormwater retrofit analysis for a town, which will they will perform during the follow-up practicum semester.

     

    • 3 credits
    • Open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
    • No prerequisites, but NRE 3125 (Watershed Hydrology) is recommended preparation
    • Meets: Tu/Th 2:00 – 3:15
