  • Job Opportunity: Fall 2020 EVST Student Job

    The Department of Environmental Sciences is looking to hire an Honors student to help with EVST 1000 in Fall 2020. This position is an excellent opportunity for students to gain teaching experience, work closely with a professor, lead discussion groups and learn about other aspects of professional academia. Among other things, undergraduate instructional experience is great preparation for graduate school. The Student Instructional Specialists’ (SIS) primary duties will be to provide mentorship and leadership for student leaders enrolled in EVST 1000. SISs will learn about effective pedagogy as they work with students who are in different stages of development than themselves. SISs will have the opportunity to evaluate and continue to develop their own leadership styles while also developing their presentation and interpersonal skills. 

    Duties include: 

    1. Participate actively in EVST 1000 and in staff meetings.
    2. Facilitate small and large group discussions in EVST 1000.
    3. Mentor students in EVST 1000.
    4. Guide, create, and implement EVST 1000 activities.
    5. Attend regular staff meetings with EVST 1000 professor in order to review class activities. Meeting topics may include, but are not limited to, discussions about students’ reactions to the course, discussions about the student dynamic in the classroom, analysis of the impact of course activities, etc.
    6. Complete required tasks, which may include, but are not limited to, leading weekly 50-minute discussion session; grading weekly quizzes/assignments and other course assignments.
    7. Complete other administrative tasks as assigned by the professor.

    Requirments:

    1. Be in good standing with the Honors Program. 
    2. Have experience with environmental-focused coursework. 
    3. Ideally, have completed EVST 1000.
    4. Be able to attend EVST 1000 class meetings on MW 10:10-11 AM during the Fall 2020 semester.
    5. Be able to meet weekly with the course instructor to develop the 50-minute discussion sessions (exact day and time to be determined based on availability).

    Pay rate and hours: $13.40/hr and 5hrs/wk on average.
