Boren Scholarships and Fellowships offer unique opportunities for U.S. undergraduates and graduate students to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.  Successful candidates should be interested in spending 6 to 12 months studying the target language and culture of the host country.  Candidates for the Boren awards choose their own study abroad program and commit to working for the federal government for one year for each year of funding received.

The Boren Scholarships also offer a special initiative for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. The scholarships fund up to $8,000 for summer study (minimum of 8 weeks) for students majoring in STEM disciplines. STEM majors may also apply for semester and year programs.
