Alex Katz will be presenting "Advising Independent Students"
Independent students may be identified as a ward of the state, estranged from their families, or not receiving family support while in college. Students in this situation can struggle to prioritize being a student as they may also be working full time, experiencing food and housing insecurity, or navigating college without family support. It can be difficult to identify students in this situation due to fear of disclosure and thus these students are not receiving the supports that they need to thrive in college. This session will explore common barriers to success for these students as well as strategies and available campus resources to help these students persist to graduation.
