    Summer Internship Opportunity

    URU: The Right To Be, Inc. (URU), is seeking qualified student summer intern candidates, including those majoring in the social sciences (e.g., sociology, political science, psychology, anthropology, communication studies, economics, etc.) and English.

    This internship opportunity will provide the selected candidate with a well-rounded, hands-on experience within a nonprofit agency actively addressing the lack of underrepresented minorities (women, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and people with disabilities) in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine via its signature national education initiative, “Changing the Face of STEM.”

    What is URU? URU is a nonprofit content production company that tackles social issues. Changing the Face of STEM, addresses the historic, persistent disenfranchisement and marginalization within culturally, linguistically and economically neglected communities and encourages underrepresented minorities to identify with, aspire to and pursue careers in STEM and medicine. To achieve that goal, URU seeks to inform and influence public policy at all levels of government, academia and the private sector and to serve as a catalyst for positive change.

    Internship Description

    This Internship offers the opportunity to build and strengthen professional skills, particularly in writing, organization and communications, as part of a broad campaign to influence public opinion and affect change. The functions the successful candidate is expected to perform include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Help create and edit written content for URU’s Changing the Face of STEM and other ongoing initiatives
    • Work with URU staff on other projects and special events, including managing logistics and producing printed material, press releases, policy statements, grant and funding applications, online and social media content, etc.
    • Help prepare strategies and content to communicate company’s message across multiple platforms
    • Participate in advocacy that will directly impact the landscape of public policy
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications/Requirements

    Ideal candidates will be energetic, inventive, hardworking and enthusiastic about URU and its mission. The qualifications successful candidates should possess include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Currently enrolled in a university bachelor’s program, in a graduate degree program, or a recent graduate
    • Strong, effective written, verbal, interpersonal and presentation skills
    • The ability to type 65 words per minute
    • Outstanding organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments and manage multiple assignments simultaneously
    • Ability to work in fast-paced environment
    • Maturity, creativity, flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor
    • The ability to accept, internalize, and benefit from constructive criticism
    • The ability to work effectively as a team member/collaborator, but also skilled at working independently on assigned tasks/projects
    • Good decision-making ability
    • Strong project management skills
    • Commitment of 30+ hours per week, on a regular and pre-determined schedule, starting on or after May 10, 2019 for a period of up to 15 weeks
    • Be open to/available for occasional evening or weekend special event assignments, if available
    • Be open to/available for occasional overnight travel to cover/work at special event assignments, if available
    • Experience using Microsoft Office software
    • Possess own transportation

    Stipend

    The successful candidate(s) will receive a stipend, based on experience. If your institution requests academic credit as a form of compensation, URU will work with the university to apply the student’s summer experience toward credit for independent study.
