  • 2019 John & Valerie Rowe Scholars Visiting Lecture

The 2019 John and Valerie Rowe Scholars Visiting Lecture will be held on April 15, 2019 at 5:00 pm in the Student Union Theatre. All are welcome! Nicola Santoro, MD, PhD of the Yale School of Medicine will be presenting a talk entitled Pediatric Obesity and its Metabolic Complications: A Clinical Investigator Perspective.

Dr. Santoro is a pediatrician whose main clinical and research interest is in childhood obesity and its metabolic complications. He grew up in the south of Italy where he earned his medical degree and his PhD at the Seconda Universita’ di Napoli (Napoli, Italy). He became interested in clinical investigation during medical school when he had the opportunity to learn that research is indeed the indispensable tool that the clinician needs to overcome the challenges that human pathology hides.

His research currently focuses on the mechanisms underlying pediatric obesity, type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in youth. He has contributed to identifying and characterizing gene variants predisposing children to become obese and to develop early onset obesity, diabetes and fatty liver disease. More recently his research has been focused on the role of gut microbiota in conveying susceptibility to childhood obesity and its complications.
