    Marketing & Communications Intern

    Position: (Intern) Marketing & Communications Aide for Non-Profit Arts Center in Capital City

    Reports To: Designated Board Member(s)

    FLSA Status: Non-exempt

    Position Summary:

    The Marketing & Communications Intern is responsible for establishing positive associations with the public and mass media on behalf of the organization. A key mission of the position will be to assist in the development and execution of that aspect of the organization’s strategic plan which calls for increased community outreach and the consolidation and build-out of a single comprehensive public relations strategy. The Artists Collective is a multi-cultural arts center serving the Hartford, CT region. Founded in 1970 the Collective offers arts education, training and performance opportunities to youth which focus on the African Diaspora. The position is an ideal opportunity for a student of marketing, sales, and/or communications to work within and learn from a premier organization in the arts and cultural education space. Rebranding of the Collective is essential as it transitions into a more agile and efficient center for community progress, particularly as relates to its mission to serve the underprivileged and those most in need within the Hartford region. The position requires knowledge of modern social media platforms, and some familiarity with website design and operation would be helpful. The successful candidate should be sharp, an innovative and enthusiastic presence who can interact with internal and external stakeholders while representing the organization well in his or her communications with whom daily interaction occurs. 

    Specific responsibilities include

    • Social media management: creating original copy for platforms such as (but not limited to) Instagram, Twitter and Facebook

    Education & Experience:

    Preference shall be given to a student enrolled in a BA or BS degree program with at least 30 credit hours completed, some prior experience in either writing, journalism, sales & marketing, or prior work within a non-profit organization. Bilingual (Spanish) helpful, but not required 

    Key Skill Requirements: To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following key skill requirements to perform the essential functions of this position.

    • Attention to Detail – Reading, recording, or verifying written information without making "clerical mistakes" such as omissions, coding errors, and number reversals.  This includes following detailed routines or processes exactly and ensuring that all of the requirements or activities are fully satisfied.
    • Communicating with Others – Speaking clearly and concisely with coworkers, supervisors, other employees and customers one-on-one or small group settings.  This includes communicating information of a technical or specialized nature to people outside of one's area of expertise.
    • Autonomy – Willingness to work without close supervision, making sure tasks are completed on time, without error, and up to quality standards.
    • Computer Skills – Using computer systems to input, access, modify, or output information. 
    • Time Management – Managing time so that the priority of the activities determines the timing and amount of attention they receive. A successful candidate will maintaining the highest ethical standards of behavior in dealing with customers, city partners, coworkers, and others, while following organizational policies and procedures – Performing routine operations in a manner that is consistent with existing solutions to problems; conforming to established policies and procedures; interpreting and applying policy correctly in situations where it is not clearly stated.

    Work Context:

    • Indoor workspace: typical office setting.
    • Telephone: must be able to be on the phone throughout the day.
    • Must be able to drive to pick up materials and collect data for website.
    • Will be in contact with others via face to face, email and telephone.
    • Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.
    • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
