Graduating Seniors

  • CLAS Commencement: Student Speaker Competition

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is excited to offer the fourth annual Student Speaker Competition for the CLAS undergraduate commencement ceremony.  Two graduating students will be selected to present remarks on behalf of their fellow graduates at one of the two CLAS commencement ceremonies that will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2018.

The Dean’s Office, which organizes the Commencement proceedings, encourages you to reach out to graduating CLAS students whom you think would be strong candidates for this opportunity.  Students who are interested should submit a typed manuscript of their speech, which should be no longer than 5 spoken minutes (~750 words) to clas_commencement@uconn.edu. Submissions will be accepted until noon on Friday, March 9th.

The student speaker committee, which will include faculty, staff, and students from CLAS, will review all submissions and select five to move on to the next phase of competition.  For the second phase, students will be asked to present their speeches to the committee as if they were giving it on commencement day.  These auditions are scheduled to take place during the first week in April 2018.

After the committee has heard the speeches, they will select two students to speak at commencement, one at the 12:30p ceremony and one at the 5:00p ceremony.  Selections will be made no later than April 9th.
