Mathematics Wilcox Fellow
Concord Academy, an independent college preparatory school for grades 9 through 12
located in Concord, Massachusetts, anticipates an opening for a Wilcox Fellow teaching
position in its Mathematics Department beginning in the fall of 2018. Chartered in 1922,
the school currently enrolls approximately 382 boarding and day students from ten
countries and territories and fifteen states.
Students are engaged in a community animated by a love of learning, enriched by a
diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, and guided by a covenant of common trust.
Students and teachers work together as a community of learners dedicated to intellectual
rigor and creative endeavor. In a caring and challenging atmosphere, students discover and
develop talents as scholars, artists, musicians, and athletes and are encouraged to find their
voices. The school is committed to embracing and broadening the diversity of backgrounds,
perspectives, and talents of its people. Common trust challenges students to balance
individual freedom with responsibility and service to a larger community. Such learning
prepares students for lives as committed citizens.
Concord Academy’s Math Department offers students a breadth of ways to engage with
mathematics. We offer classes ranging from Algebra 1 through several semesters beyond
AP-level calculus, as well as some math/social sciences courses. Our teachers tend to
emphasize problem-solving and group-work, as students typically spend much of each
day’s class time collaborating with their peers as they learn new material and apply it to a
variety of problems. The Wilcox Fellow will spend the fall semester co-teaching two
sections of a math course with an experienced member of the department. In the spring,
the Fellow will assume primary responsibility for two sections of a course with oversight
and guidance from the department mentor. The ideal candidate brings subject knowledge,
enthusiasm, and a desire work closely with colleagues and students.
The Wilcox Fellows program seeks to identify and nourish teaching talent among groups
underrepresented on independent school faculties. Fellows workshop pedagogy with
experienced faculty and meet regularly with other teachers new to the school to talk about
teaching and learning. They are mentored by a colleague and supervised by the Dean of
Faculty and Department Chair. Fellows carry half-time teaching or subject loads and are
able to put their full energy into developing expertise and skill in their chosen area of
school life, while nurturing a commitment to working with adolescents in a stimulating and
supportive academic setting. Many fellows choose to work with student affinity groups or
the school’s Office of Community & Equity. The duration of the Fellowship is one year, with
the possibility of renewal for a second. For fellows who continue at CA in a second year, the
school provides support toward graduate work and mentorship in the job search and/or
graduate school application process. Housing on campus may be available, as well as
coaching opportunities, but they are not required. Coaching carries additional
compensation.
Interested candidates are asked to send a resume with a cover letter, transcript, a
statement about the ways they will contribute to the diversity of the Concord Academy
faculty, and the names and contact information of three references to:
