  • Yale Myth & Meaning Conference: Call for Abstracts

A collaboration of student groups at Yale Divinity School is hosting a conference at YDS entitled "Myth & Meaning," on Saturday, February 10th 2018. This year's theme is on "The Poetics of Narrative."  Please see the call for abstracts below.

We are excited to announce the 1st Myth & Meaning Graduate Student Conference, taking place at Yale Divinity School; New Haven, CT. on Saturday February 10th 2018. We are seeking proposals that address this year’s inaugural theme: “The Poetics of Narrative.” We will provide an inclusive and broad cross-section of academic and creative works dealing with an abundant possibility of topics. We encourage the submission of abstracts from a variety of fields with an emphasis on discussing broadly narratives, poetry, and mythologies.

    Some potential themes could include:
    ·         How do personal and historical narratives shape contemporary communities?
    ·         An evolution of the role of storytellers.
    ·         How can indigenous epistemologies inform Euro-American environmental practices?
    ·         The use of metaphor in language.
    ·         Ancient mythologies and their continual retellings.
    ·         Political narratives and the poetry of exiles.
    ·         Challenging hegemonic narratives, and what counts as ‘subversive’ story telling.
    ·         Anthropology and the reconstruction of ancient wisdom.
    ·         How do we read a text while acknowledging the challenges of some hermeneutics?

We encourage applications from graduate students in and around New Haven, including Boston and New York. We encourage applications from those working in African American Studies, Gender Studies, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Anthropology, Literary Criticism, Art History, and from various fields in the Humanities whose work orbits this year’s conference topic. In seeking to assemble a diverse symposium of scholars, we especially encourage students from diverse and minority backgrounds to apply.
