DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program
The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories.
Eligibility: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
Deadline: Varies, see website
Facebook Fellowship
The Facebook Fellowship Program and Emerging Scholar Awards are designed to encourage and support promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering. While open to students in any year of PhD study, a heavy emphasis on research and publication record for Facebook Fellowships favor students who are further along in their course of study. First or second year PhD students who are members of a minority group that is underrepresented in the technology sector have the option of being evaluated for an emerging scholar award.
Citizenship: Unrestricted
Deadline: October 31, 2017

GEM Consortium Fellowships
The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.
GEM provides three Fellowship Programs.MS Engineering Fellowship Program: The objective of this program is to promote the benefits of a masters degree within industry. Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship: The objective of this program is to offer doctoral fellowships to underrepresented minority students who have either completed, are currently enrolled in a master’s in engineering program, or received admittance into a PhD program directly from a bachelor’s degree program. Ph.D. Science Fellowship: The goal of this program is to increase the number of minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in the natural science disciplines.
Citizenship: U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Deadline: November 13
Grand Challenges for Engineering International Scholarships - Vest Scholarships
The Charles M. Vest NAE Grand Challenges for Engineering International Scholarships International Scholarship Program provides a new opportunity for graduate students at selected international universities to pursue research addressing a global Grand Challenge at a leading United States university - with all expenses paid for a year of travel and study.

National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants
NSF award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question.
Citizenship: Unrestricted
Deadlines: varied (apply under your appropriate NSF directorate)
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships (NSF GRFP)
