    Communications Intern

    Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Executive Officer of Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS), coordinates and provides program support relating to communications and newsletter formatting.  

    Organizational Profile:  Established in 1969, SWS is a nonprofit professional feminist organization, dedicated to feminist scholarship, leadership, and activism.  We are a positive, friendly, small staff looking for someone who wants to work remotely and be a part of a strong team.     Description:  Seeking an intern majoring in a business-related field (marketing, business administration, etc.), digital media and design, communications. The ideal candidate who fills this position will serve as an important component in promoting our organization. It is essential that applicants to this position have exceptional written communication skills, demonstrate creativity, and understand the importance of organizational skills. The ideal candidate will also have a passion for the feminist mission of SWS.

    Responsibilities:

    • General administrative support to Executive Officer as needed to manage queries and correspondence
    • Support for annual election
      • Assist with biannual meeting planning involving scheduling and program creation
      • Communicate with membership through carefully constructed individual emails and general listserv announcements
      • Support the production of the quarterly newsletter, Network News through newsletter formatting in Microsoft Publisher

    Requirements: Students applying for this internship must have:

    • Proficiency in a number of software applications (such as: Excel, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher)
    • Familiarity in a number of social media tools (such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)
    • Strong written communication skills
    • Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.0

    Learning Experiences: The intern will have the opportunity to be a part of the launching of a redesigned website that will have mobile capability and a variety of new features including an interactive member directory. The intern will be invited to join SWS and will have the opportunity to attend our Winter Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia from January 25-28, 2018 with a waived registration fee and with the opportunity to receive up to $300 to go toward the reimbursement of travel costs. The intern will be invited to attend a portion of the Site Visit Meeting in the Greater Hartford Area with members of the SWS Council to take place on November 17 and 18, 2018.

    Majors: Business-related, Digital Media and Design, Communications; Seniors and Graduate Students are welcome to apply.

    Course Credit Opportunities* /Benefits: SWS Student Membership valued at $20 and up to $300 toward travel costs associated with (optional) attendance at the 2018 SWS Winter Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

    Internship dates:  August 28, 2017 – August 24, 2018
