  • Reminder: Taxes - No U.S.Income

Tax information for international students, scholars, and dependents with no income:

IF YOU HAD NO U.S. INCOME IN 2016:

You may need to complete and submit a Form 8843 if:

    - you were present in the U.S. with an F/J visa during 2016 and

    - you were a non-resident for tax purposes during 2016

Most international students are non-residents for tax purposes for the first five calendar years in the U.S. with the F/J visa. Most visiting scholar or student interns are non-residents for tax purposes for the first two calendar years in the U.S. on the J visa.  This also applies to F2 and J2 dependents with no income. Please follow these instructions to complete Form 8843. If you did not receive income, your deadline to submit Form 8843 is June 15th.

Find more information on taxes on the ISSS Tax Resources webpage and on the UConn Vita program FAQ for Foreign Students and Scholars.
