  • Graduate Research Position, Dept. of Statistics

    Applications are invited for a Graduate Research Assistant position in the Department of Statistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the newly established Data Science Lab (DSL). The DSL aims to train both undergraduate and graduate students (in Statistics and beyond) in a joint learning-by-doing environment and extract problems for possible thesis research.

     Under the direction of Professors Kun Chen, Elizabeth Schifano, and Jun Yan, the successful candidate will construct (from scratch) and maintain a website for the DSL to 1) showcase data science case studies, and facilitate discussion around specific projects; and 2) provide information services relating to data science, including discussion board / mailing list, and community-written documentation. The website will eventually be made publicly available.

     

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Experience using HTML, CSS, and a server-side scripting language like PHP, or a web framework like Rails / Ruby, Flask / Python, etc.
    • Knowledge of front-end Javascript. Skilled at database (MySQL or other) and application management. Experience building and maintaining a dynamic website backed by a content management system (CMS).
    • Detail oriented. Timely response.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with R, Markdown, Shiny, and other tools that are crucial for reproducible statistical research.
    • Experience with big data analytics and computing.

     

    Appointment Terms

    This is a half RA position (10 hours/week) starting in the Spring 2017 semester and potentially renewable for Fall 2017 contingent upon satisfactory performance, mutual agreement, and availability of funds.
