    Abstract:

In Richards (2016), I propose a new approach to the interaction between phonology and syntax; in particular, the idea is that the derivation of certain kinds of phonological structure begins earlier than is standardly assumed, during the narrow syntax, and that the syntactic derivation can be constrained by the need to improve the phonological structure.  The resulting theory, called Contiguity Theory, makes predictions about the cross-linguistic distribution of various types of overt movement and adjacency requirements.  In this talk I will apply the principles of Contiguity Theory to the problem of pied-piping.  We will see that the proposals of Richards (2016) can be used to derive Cable's (2007, 2010) conditions on pied-piping.
