    Boren Graduate Fellowships

    Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

    Catholic Relief Services International Development Services

    The Catholic Relief Services IDFP provides an overseas opportunity to those interested in careers in international relief and development with a faith-based organization. Fellows increase their overseas experience and gain project management skills as they contribute to the work of Catholic Relief Services. More than 80% of IDFP participants go on to become program managers with CRS.  These 10-month fellowship opportunities are based overseas in one of our country programs.  Fellows experience different facets of running a CRS program overseas. They are exposed to project management, business development, budgeting, working with donors, working with partners, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting.

    Chateaubriand Fellowship

    The Chateaubriand Fellowship program, organized by the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in Washington, finances the stay in France of American PhD students for a period ranging from 4 to 9 months, as part of a co-supervised research project, and possibly the joint supervision ("cotutelle") of their thesis leading to a dual PhD diploma.

    Eligibility: You must be a student in an American university (U.S. citizenship is not required)

    Confucius China Studies Program Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship

    The program provides generous funding and support for qualified students who wish to pursue doctoral research in China. Funding awards range from six months to two years. Students from a wide range of academic areas focusing on China are encouraged to apply. Applications from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds in the Humanities, Arts, Education, and Social Sciences are welcomed.

    Council of American Overseas Research Centers

    The Council of American Overseas Research Centers offers a focused regional fellowship program enabling pre- and early postdoctoral scholars to carry out research in the humanities and related social sciences in countries bordering the Mediterranean and served by American overseas research centers.

    Foreign Language and Area Studies Program (FLAS) – Title VI –

    The program funds centers around the country that provide fellowships to promote foreign language competencies. The UA is home a program in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (http://cmes.arizona.edu/FLAS). some other FLAS programs at other institutions are open for all students.     Fulbright Student Program – Institute of International Education (IIE)

    Fulbright administers the following fellowships for US students, academic, arts, English teaching assistantships, mtv-U awards, public policy fellowships, and travel grants.

    Fulbright Canada – The U.S.-Canada Fulbright Program

    Traditional Fulbright Student Awards are available for recent undergraduates, graduate students, and junior faculty who wish to pursue graduate study or independent research in Canada.

    Fulbright Hays – Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad

    Funded by the Department of Education, these fellowships support individual doctoral students who conduct dissertation research in non-western countries for six to twelve months.     Inter-American Foundation Grassroots Development Fellowship

    IAF’s Fellowships provide support for Ph.D. candidates to conduct dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean on topics related to grassroots development. Funding is for between four and thirteen months.

    Eligibility: U.S. citizens and citizens of independent Latin American and Caribbean countries

    Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF)

    The Social Science Research Council Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually.

    NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants (DDIG) - http://www.nsf.gov/funding/

    DDIGs are intended to improve dissertations and can be used for overseas research. Not all directorates offer DDIGs or DDRIGS, but check on the website below.

    Eligibility: The PI for a DDIG is a student’s advisor, so international students are eligible

    NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI)

    NSF and selected foreign counterpart science and technology agencies sponsor international research institutes for US graduate students in seven East Asia and Pacific locations at times set by the counterpart  agencies between June and August each year. Although applicants apply individually to participate in a Summer Institute, awardees become part of the cohort for each location.

    Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)

    ORISE provides fellowships, scholarships, research experiences, and internships to graduate students in science and engineering fields. Some programs have locations outside of the US.

    Tinker Field Research Grants (competition is held just for UA students!)

    These pre-doctoral research grants provide graduate students regardless of discipline funds to travel to and within Latin America in order to conduct preliminary investigations or gain a comprehensive knowledge of language and culture.

    U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security Graduate Research Grant -United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

    The U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security graduate research grant program supports exceptional graduate students who are interested in developing a component of their graduate research in a developing country setting. All topics that relate to food security (e.g., agriculture, nutrition, ecological resources, poverty) and are linked to the research strategies of the Feed the Future initiative are admissible. The grants have a maximum value of $15-$40,000 for 6-month to 2-year long international research stays.
