How to Get Involved in Research: A Student Panel

    Date: 9/27/17

    Time: 7:30 PM

    Location: NextGen Residence Hall

The goal of the event is to provide an opportunity for underclassmen honors students to ask questions and learn how to get involved in research.

The event will mimic a kind of speed-dating or lightning round type of activity, meaning we will have separate panelists each at a table where they will have about 5/6 minutes (maybe more) to speak to a group of attendees, afterwards they will rotate on to the next group. Example: If we have seven speakers and 49 attendees, one would rotate amongst the groups of 7 attendees sitting at tables! We would like you to focus on what makes the panelists' research experience unique and not necessarily what their research is! The event is hosted via the H2O LC and Honors in STEM organizations however will be focused on providing an interdisciplinary panel! Here is a list of questions that we will give the panelists to focus on...
-A specific program or grant that you applied for (ex: Holster, Goldwater, IDEA, SURF, etc.)
-How did you approach the professor? Email, office hours, etc.
-Have you done summer/winter break third party research programs
-Are you in a lab that pertains to your major? If not, tell them why!
-Have you swapped labs or been in the same lab since starting your research career?
