  • Beyond the Field: Social Issues in Sport Series

Whether we are the diehard fans who never miss a game, a NCAA Division I student-athlete, or the kid who built sandcastles in the outfield - it is hard to deny the role sports holds in our hearts and in our society. The magnitude of which sport has consumed society as a form of entertainment or employment is impossible to ignore. In partnership with Barnes and Noble, Beyond the Field; Social Issues in Sports, is an opportunity to capture the expansive role sport has in our society through an open dialogue with esteemed experts regarding the vast array of issues related to the intersection of sport and society.

On October 4, 2016 (4-6pm) at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Storrs Center, the Department of Sport Management with be hosting esteemed author Sarah K. Fields.  Fields is an Associate Professor and Acting Associate Dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado, Denver Campus. Sarah Fields’ work is primarily focused on the intersection of gender, race, sexuality and law as it pertains to athletes and sports personalities. She has recently published, Game Faces: Sports Celebrity and the Laws of Reputation, which examines how high profile athletes fought against, what they believed to be, violations of their privacy and image.

This unique examination of sports celebrity is a vitally important conversation as we continue to hurdle into technologies of the 21st century. Many of us, if not all, have a computer in our hands with capabilities of capturing and sharing our mundane to most intimate moments. No one is immune to this new reality. Engaging in a conversation regarding what athletes and sport celebrities have done to ensure their privacy provides a distinguished perspective on this issue.
