  • Consider a Double Major or Minor in Sociology!

Hello Economics majors & minors! Are you exploring options for a double major or minor? If so, consider Sociology!

    What exactly is Sociology?

Sociology is the study of society and social influences on human behavior, such as sexuality, ethnic identity, and religious belief. Sociology is also concerned with social problems, especially all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and inequality, and with poverty, crime, violence, and the threatened environment. Sociology majors and minors study how individuals, both alone and working in groups, can change the society in which they live.

    Double Major Requirements:

Sociology works extremely well as a double major for students who already have a major in CLAS. The Sociology major simply requires one 1000-level SOCI course and eight 2000-level or higher courses in the major. These are comprised of 3 core SOCI courses and 5 elective SOCI courses including one W course. We also require 4 Related courses but ECON courses are automatically approved as Sociology Relateds! Additionally, SOCI courses can be used as Relateds for the Economics major!

    Minor Requirements:

We offer a minor in Sociology that simply requires one 1000-level SOCI course, either SOCI 3201 or 3251, and 4 elective 2000-level or higher SOCI courses. Students from any major at UConn can add Sociology as a minor.

    4+1 Program:

Our brand new 4+1 Fast Track Master’s in Sociology program is designed to provide qualified students the opportunity to complete both their Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in just 5 years! Sophomores and juniors from any major can apply.

    Careers:

Sociology prepares students for a wide variety of career options in everything from counseling and social work, to criminal justice and law, human resources, marketing/advertising/sales/business, non-profits, and more. We are a great major for pre-law students and have pre-med/health students as well.
