Advising on Education Abroad

  • Upperclassmen International Student Options

The following message was sent to upperclassmen International Undergraduate Students by UConn ISSS and Experiential Global Learning (formerly Education Abroad):

We are writing to you about the University’s recent announcement for Fall 2021 reentry, and options for international students. The University of Connecticut is aware that many international students are currently outside the United States, and that on-going travel difficulties due to the pandemic may prevent some students from arriving on campus.

Here is more information about options for fall semester:

Option 1)   Study in-person at UConn.

    • This option may be best for students who already have an F-1 visa that will be unexpired for travel in August, and who are located in countries that allow for direct travel to the United States.
    • Direct travel is currently not possible from China, Iran, Brazil and South Africa to the United States. Check the CDC Travelers Prohibited from Entry to the United States for the latest information.
    • For students who need to obtain or renew the F-1 visa, it might be difficult or impossible to get a visa appointment in time for arrival in August, depending on your location. ISSS will provide you with more information and can help you review your particular travel situation.
    • If you plan to study in the United States, you must register for at least 12 credits to be considered full-time, and only one course, up to three credits, can be taken as online, hybrid or distance learning. If it is your final semester, you may have fewer credits, with an approved Reduced Course Load.
    • Students who plan to arrive for in-person classes will receive more information in the coming weeks from ISSS and the University about planning for arrival.

Option 2) Opportunities through EducationAbroad/Experiential Global Learning

The University is also exploring opportunities for international undergraduate students who are unable to arrive on campus to enroll with partner institutions for transfer credit.  UConn's partner institutions in China--East China Normal University, Fudan University, and the University of Nottingham Ningbo-- and UConn’s partner in the United Kingdom-- Anglo Educational Services-- have provided UConn with additional spots in their programs for the Fall 2021 semester.

Below is an overview of the four programs available:

    1. East China Normal University (UConn Program)

    1. DEADLINE PASSED Fudan University (UConn Program)- Limited spots available!

    1. University of Nottingham Ningbo (UConn Program)

    1. Semester at London (UConn Programs)

    3) Students who need UConn courses that are offered in-person, but cannot arrive on-campus

    • Some students need specific UConn courses in Fall 2021, but those are only offered in-person.
    • If you cannot arrive for in-person classes, we encourage you to consider one of the Experiential Global Learning (EGL) options listed above.
    • If the EGL options are not academically suitable for you, please tell ISSS that you need help to find alternative arrangements for in-person classes by submitting your Fall 2021 Study Plan (select option #5) by May 24. The University will review your options to meet in-person course requirements remotely, but we need more information from you to assess your remote learning needs.
    • Some students may find suitable course options are currently listed as online or distance learning course modality. In this situation, you may register for those courses and remain in your home country.

    Important Next Steps:

    • Students who are interested in EGL opportunities (option 2) are invited to meet with advisors from both the EGL and ISSS teams to discuss your individual plans.  Meet with advisors:
      • April 12 - May 13, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. No appointment is needed - after clicking to join the meeting, you will be admitted to a waiting room and advisors will allow you to join the meeting when they are free (if already meeting with a student, you may need to wait your turn).
      • Link for the advising meetings: https://uconnvtc.webex.com/meet/isss
    • Apply to EGL opportunities of interest, by the deadlines listed above.
    • All students must report to ISSS their study plan for Fall 2021 by May 24, 2021.  Based on the information you provide, we will advise you on your situation and issue immigration document updates, if needed. Contact international@uconn.edu if you have questions about reporting your information. Report your study plan here.

You will receive a lot of information in the coming months regarding these options. It will be very important to check your UConn email regularly, and watch for important announcements for international students.

We thank you for your continued patience and understanding during these difficult times. We are here to support you, whether at UConn or abroad, and we wish you all best wishes and good health in the coming months.
