SEX, MONEY, POLITICS AND LAW - POLS 2998W
Taught by Professor Zehra F. K. Arat
This course is about power. It examines the distribution of power, power relations, and power struggles by focusing on gender power dynamics. It studies how sex assigned at birth is used to construct gender roles and norms, and how those norms interact with economic, political and legal structures. In addition to the factors that contribute to the subjugation of women, it discusses women’s struggles – how they challenge cultural and legal norms, use national and international laws to combat discrimination, and seek to transform economic and political systems. Emphasizing the diversity among women, it examines the factors that contribute to variations in their experiences, as well as the differences in their issues and priorities. The course fulfills the Comparative Politics requirement for the POLS major.
Enrollment Requirements: ENGL 1007 or 1010 or 1011
