Jumpstart is working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Through this program, college students around the country are matched with preschool children for the entire academic year to enhance their language and literacy skills. Jumpstart UConn has been a part of Community Outreach for 6 years; each year it selects 80 high-caliber, dedicated UConn students to participate. Jumpstart invites UConn students to submit applications for the Corps, to join its team of committed students.
A note from Emily Baseler, UConn, Jumpstart Student Program Director:
Being a part of Jumpstart for the last two years has been an amazing experience for me. You have the opportunity to change a child's life – every time you walk into their classroom! As a Corps member, you work with the same children throughout the year. You form close bonds with these children while implementing a national curriculum focused on language and literacy skills. I am always happy to discuss my personal experience in the program, and answer any questions you may have:uconn.co.jumpstart@gmail.com. Additional information about the program is listed below and on our website: www.jumpstart.uconn.edu. To submit an application, visit: https://application.jstart.org/. Remember to select 'Corps member' as the position you are applying for. I encourage you to submit an application ASAP!
Commitment:
Corps members make a full-year 300-hour commitment (approximately 10-12 hours/week); students must have the same 4-hour timeblock available both in the Fall and Spring semesters in order to participate:
Full-Year Schedule:
Option 1: Mondays AND Wednesdays 12:30-4:30pm
Option 2: Monday AND Wednesday 12:45 pm- 4:45 pm
Option 3: Mondays AND Wednesday 2:30-6:30pm
Option 4: Mondays AND Wednesday 2:00 pm -4:00pm

Education Award:
Each student who successfully completes the program, and the 300 hours of service, is then able to receive an Education Award in the amount of $1,175. The Education Award may be used to pay education expenses at an educational institution in the U.S., or be put towards student loan payments
Work Study:
If students have been awarded work-study funds as part of their financial aid package, Jumpstart may be used as a work-study placement. However, the position is volunteer; there are no additional funds available to pay students for their participation in the program, and the program does not provide a tuition waiver
